The Harrow West MP addressed the lack of dedicated police teams for Harrow Town Centre to Met Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick

Last Tuesday, West Harrow Police Officers and Gareth Thomas MP joined residents at the Old Lyonian’s Club on Pinner View, for a public meeting to discuss policing actions moving forward and to encourage women to share their thoughts and experiences regarding violence and women and girls in Harrow.

Following a meeting, which saw over fifty women and girls from North and West Harrow in attendance, Gareth Thomas, writing on behalf of residents in the meeting has started to address concerns directly to Government Ministers and Met Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick.

Several issues were raised in Tuesday’s meeting, including the lack of police presence in the town centre and lighting by major train hubs. Addressing incidents of anti-social behaviour in central Harrow as well as other criminal activity targeted against shops and shoppers, the Harrow West MP pressed the Met Commissioner for an increased police presence.

There were many other issues raised in the meeting, including harassment of women in stations and on public transport, street lighting around stations, as well on the education of boys and men. The Harrow West MP will be raising some of these issues directly with Transport for London, Harrow Council and in Parliament.

In writing to the Met Commissioner, Cressida Dick, Gareth Thomas said:

“In the past, the town centre in my borough has had a dedicated police team, but, as a result of Home Office failures, we have seen a significant reduction in police available to Harrow since the 2012 Olympics.

I welcome the announcement of a dedicated team for Harlesden and Wembley but given that Harrow is both a significant commercial district in its own right, has an increasing nightlife and is an important transport hub with Harrow Bus Station and Harrow on the Hill Station both within the town centre, I struggle to understand why it hasn’t been prioritised for its own dedicated team of police officers.
